I had a very interesting conversation recently with the Managing Partner of a law firm, the nub of which was a debate around whether law firms needed an 'airy-fairy' vision, when what they really wanted was a way through their predicament of static revenues, increasing costs, and thus declining per partner profits ...
 all businesses must have a strong vision statement to give them a common purpose
Our first answer was that "without a shared vision, businesses lack the common purpose that binds them together when facing challenging times". We ended up with, "unless you can agree why you're together, you'll find it tough to get agreement on what you want to do". It didn't matter. They both say the same thing, although in different words. Words which mean something to the reader. Which is essentially what a vision should do...
